Getting a good GIF for where it's going

Frame rate and file size are a trade-off
A GIF is really just a sequence of full images stitched together with per-frame delays — there's no video compression happening between frames, so every frame you add makes the file bigger. A lower frame rate (5–10 fps) is usually enough for reaction GIFs and slideshows and keeps files small; reserve 15–24 fps for clips where the motion itself needs to look smooth, like sports or dance.
Sizing a GIF for chat apps and forums
- Chat apps and messaging platforms often cap attachment sizes or auto-compress large GIFs, which can make them look worse than if you'd sized them down yourself. Keeping the output width around 320–480px is a safe middle ground between clarity and file size.
- Forum signatures and inline images tend to be small and narrow — a shorter clip trimmed tightly, at a lower frame rate, will load faster and won't get auto-resized into something blurry.
- Social posts can usually afford a larger width (640–720px) since most platforms convert GIFs to video on upload anyway, but trimming to the essential moment still keeps the file manageable.
Video clips vs. photo slideshows
Converting a video clip is the right choice when you want to capture real motion — a reaction, a highlight, a moment from a recording. Building a GIF from photos instead is better for before/after comparisons, product shots, or a sequence of stills where each frame needs to hold for a beat rather than blend into the next; a longer per-frame delay (300–600ms) usually reads more naturally than a fast slideshow.
