Bitcoin is pseudonymous, not anonymous
Every Bitcoin address and every transaction is permanently recorded on a public ledger that anyone can read. On its own, an address isn't tied to a name — but every payment it has ever sent or received is visible to anyone who looks it up, forever.
Why address reuse is the biggest leak
Bitcoin wallets are designed to generate a fresh address for every payment you receive. Reusing the same address — posting it publicly, sharing it with multiple people, or using it as a static invoice — means every one of those payments gets linked together in one place. Anyone who has ever paid that address can now see its full balance and complete activity history, not just their own payment.
What spending from an address reveals
When an address is spent from, its inputs are combined with any other addresses used in that same transaction. Chain analysis commonly assumes — usually correctly — that all inputs in a single transaction belong to the same wallet. That means a spend can quietly link an otherwise-unrelated address to your wider wallet activity.
