Understanding Bitcoin's units

A quick reference for the denominations you'll run into across wallets, invoices, and exchanges.

BTC, mBTC, bits, and satoshis

Bitcoin is divisible down to eight decimal places, and each denomination has its own name so amounts stay easy to read and speak out loud:

  • BTC — the whole unit. 1 BTC = 100,000,000 satoshis.
  • mBTC (millibitcoin) — one-thousandth of a BTC. 1 mBTC = 100,000 satoshis.
  • bits (μBTC) — one-millionth of a BTC. 1 bit = 100 satoshis. Popular for everyday amounts since the numbers stay small and readable.
  • satoshi (sat) — the smallest unit Bitcoin can be divided into, named after Bitcoin's pseudonymous creator. 1 satoshi = 0.00000001 BTC.

Why convert to fiat at all?

Bitcoin's price moves constantly, and most people still think in their local currency day to day. Converting lets you sanity-check a wallet balance, price something you're about to buy or sell, plan a signature-campaign payout, or just see what a stack of satoshis is actually worth right now — without opening an exchange account or doing the maths by hand.

Where the numbers come from

The BTC price updates from a live market feed. Fiat exchange rates come from a free, key-free rates API that refreshes roughly once a day — accurate enough for everyday conversions, though for the last few decimal places on a large transaction it's worth double-checking against your exchange's own quote at the moment of the trade.
