What's the difference between Lump Sum and DCA mode?

Lump Sum mode calculates a single one-time purchase on a specific date, like "what if I put $1,000 into Bitcoin 6 months ago". DCA mode simulates a recurring investment, like buying $100 of Bitcoin every week or month, and totals up the results.

Where does the price data come from?

Historical and current Bitcoin prices are fetched live from CoinGecko and mempool.space, with Binance used automatically as a backup if either is unavailable. Gold comparisons use PAX Gold (PAXG), a token backed 1:1 by physical gold, as a live price proxy. S&P 500 comparisons use its long-run historical average annual return rather than day-by-day price data, since a free, key-free, CORS-friendly daily equity price feed isn't available.

Why can I only pick a date from the last 5 years?

This calculator reads Bitcoin and gold prices from Cointikka's own database, backfilled to August 2021 and updated automatically every day. Pick any purchase or start date within that window — the date sliders above are already limited to it — and the calculator will run normally.

What is max drawdown?

Max drawdown is the largest peak-to-trough decline your investment experienced at any point during the holding period, shown as a percentage. It's a way to see how much volatility you would have had to sit through to get your final result.

How is annualized return calculated?

Lump Sum mode uses standard CAGR (compound annual growth rate) between the purchase date and today. DCA mode solves for a single money-weighted annual rate (similar to XIRR) that reconciles every individual purchase's cash flow with the final portfolio value, since each buy has a different holding period.
