Why exact pixel dimensions matter
Forums and social platforms handle oversized or wrongly-shaped uploads differently — some reject the file outright, others silently squash it to fit, which is how avatars end up looking stretched or off-center. Cropping to the exact dimensions before you upload avoids both problems entirely.
Bitcointalk and AltcoinTalk
Both forums cap avatars at 80 pixels tall and 120 pixels wide. A wide rectangular crop uses the full allowance, while a plain 80×80 square also fits comfortably under both limits if you'd rather keep a square avatar consistent with your other accounts. Note that Bitcointalk only enables avatars once your account reaches Full Member rank or above.
Reddit and Twitter/X
Both platforms mask your square upload into a circle, so keep faces and logos centered — anything near the corners gets clipped. Reddit works with a 256×256px upload but looks noticeably sharper at 512 or 1024px since it's displayed at various sizes across the site. Twitter/X standardizes on 400×400px.
Telegram, WhatsApp, Facebook, and Discord
All four also mask a square upload into a circle, so the same "keep it centered" rule applies. Facebook is the only one of the four with a genuinely official spec — 320×320px, straight from Meta's Help Center. Telegram (512×512px) and Discord (512×512px, 128×128px minimum) publish their accepted/recommended sizes without calling either one "official." WhatsApp doesn't publish a spec at all; 640×640px is simply the size that's held up as the safe, sharp-looking default across current sources.
Why local-only processing matters
Every crop and resize on this page happens directly in your browser using the HTML5 Canvas API — your image is never sent to a server. That matters most for avatars taken from personal photos: there's no upload step that could fail, and no server-side copy of your picture sitting anywhere afterward.
