A little context on how detection works, what it's good at, and where it falls short.
How the detector works
The tool combines two independent, differently-trained open-source image-classification models, each downloaded once from a public model hub and cached by your browser afterward. Both look at visual patterns — textures, edges, lighting, and pixel-level artifacts — that tend to differ between camera photos and images produced or altered by generative AI, and their scores are combined (weighted toward whichever has shown better judgment) into a single estimate. Alongside that, the tool separately scans the image file's raw bytes for text traces some generators leave behind, like Stable Diffusion generation parameters or Content Credentials (C2PA) markers. When results are ambiguous or the two models disagree, the tool shows an "inconclusive" result rather than forcing a confident-looking verdict.
Why local, browser-based detection matters
Every check on this page happens directly on your device using WebAssembly — the image itself is never sent to Cointikka or any third party. That matters if you're checking something sensitive: a photo from a dating profile, a news image before sharing it, or a picture someone sent you that you're not sure is real. Because nothing leaves your device, there's no server-side copy of your image, no upload step that could fail or be intercepted, and results come back in seconds.
Limitations to keep in mind
No AI detector is perfect, and this one is no exception. It's trained mainly to recognize deepfakes and diffusion-model imagery, so it's strongest on face photos and general-purpose AI art, and weaker on heavily compressed, resized, screenshotted, or stylistically unusual images. It also can't tell you whether a real photo has been manually edited in tools like Photoshop — that's a different kind of manipulation than AI generation. Treat the result as a helpful signal to combine with your own judgment and context, not as definitive proof either way.
